George Winfield Jackson, 72, of 271 Sugar Tree Ln., Roxboro, died Friday, June 18, 2010 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington. Born in Beaufort County, NC, Mr. Jackson was the son of the late Clarence B. and Lillian Winfield Jackson. Mr. Jackson graduated from Belhaven High School in 1956, from UNC Chapel Hill in 1960 and graduated from the UNC School of Law in 1966. While at UNC, he was a member of the Chi Psi Fraternity. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Jackson served in the US Army Intelligence Corp. From 1960-1963. Mr. Jackson served as the president of the Person County Bar Association and was a member of the 9th Judicial District from 1983-1984. He was the attorney for the City of Roxboro from 1969-1971, Mayor of the City of Roxboro from 1971-1975 and later a city councilman from 1978-1979. He was also very involved with many Person County Committees. Mr. Jackson was a former member of the Roxboro Jaycees and was a co-founder of the Santa’s Helpers. He also served extensively with the Roxboro Area Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Jackson served as president of the Person County Young Republicans and later director from 1967-1971. Later that year he became chairman of the Second Congressional District Republican Party. Then from 1971-1976 and 1988-1991, he served on the executive committee of the North Carolina Republican Party. He was a member of Roxboro Baptist Church.
Mr. Jackson, known by his grandchildren as “Poppy,” is survived by his children, Burton Winfield Jackson, of Severna Park, MD, J. Gregory Jackson, of Raleigh and Jan Jackson Norr, of Wilmington; one brother, Ben Jackson, of Hamstead; two sisters, Tootsie Cox, of Washington and Marky Boss, of Raleigh; seven grandchildren, Ben Jackson, Robert Jackson, Wesley Jackson, Savannah Jackson, Maddie Norr, Ainsley Norr and Jackson Norr.
The family will receive friends 9:45 AM to 10:45 AM, Monday at the Roxboro Baptist Church with the funeral service following at 11 by the Rev. Lewis Wall. Graveside services will be held 5PM Monday at the Yeatesville Cemetery in Pinetown, NC.
Pallbearers will be Skeet Cox, Clay Boss, Steven Boss, Bill Bunting, Speedy Bunting, John Scott Winfield, Mark Wilkerson and Clay Hodges.
