Francis Warren Meekins, Sr. died Wednesday, June 23 at his home in Sunnyside on Roanoke Island. Born in Mooresville, NC on June 14, 1933, he was the son of the late D. Victor Meekins and the late Catherine Deaton Meekins of Sunnyside.
He was editor and publisher of The Coastland Times. He will be remembered for his love of North Carolina and its people, especially of Dare County and the Walter Raleigh coastland. He was involved in local real estate, and was a familiar sight at auctions.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia H. Meekins of the home; daughters, Susan M. Simpson of Manteo and Holly M. Williams and husband, Harry, of Inez; a son, F. Warren Meekins, Jr. and wife, Beverly, of Manteo; a sister, Mary Blanche Harwell and husband, Boyce, of Manteo; a brother, Roger P. Meekins and wife, Celia, of Manteo; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two grandsons.
The family invites those who wish to attend, a graveside service will be held Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Meekins Family Cemetery, Sunnyside, Roanoke Island.
Memorial donations may be made to the Roanoke Island Historical Association, Manteo, or to a charity of one’s choice.
