Mrs. Myrtis Howard Benson, age 93, a resident of Swindell Road, Pantego, N.C. died Sunday, July 4, 2010 at the Beaufort County Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday July 7, 2010 at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven officiated by Rev. Jim Bussell. A private burial will be in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Mart Benson, Glenn Williamson, Allen Wahab, Greg Tetterton, Hugh Watson and Mickey Benson will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Benson was born in Hyde County on May 30, 1917 daughter of the late William Thomas Howard and the late Sallie Benson Howard. She was a 1935 graduate of Swan Quarter High School. Mrs. Benson married Charles Martin Benson on November 5, 1938, who preceded her in death on December 23, 1982. She was the owner and operator of Myrt’s Beauty Shop until her retirement in 1977. She was a member of Pantego Christian Church where she was a member of its Adult Ladies Sunday School Class that she held the position of Secretary and Treasurer for many years, a member of Christian Women’s Fellowship, a former member of the Belhaven Eastern Star and a former member of the Beaufort County Home Demonstration Club.
Survivors include a son: Oran Martin Benson Sr. and his wife Jeannie of Pantego; a daughter: Wanda Benson Cutler and her companion Thomas L. Guthrie, Sr. of Pungo Shores; a brother: Charles Thomas Howard of Eden, NC; four grandchildren: Jill B. Williamson and her husband Glenn, Nancy B. Russ and her husband Tony, Oran M. “Mart” Benson, Jr. and his wife Anita and Betty Roberts and her husband Gerry and eight great grandchildren: Macy and Avery Williamson, Dale and Rachel Russ, Allen and Brent Benson and Chelsea and Craig Snyder. Mrs. Benson was preceded in death by a brother Curtis E. Howard and a great grandson: Cole Whitley Benson.
The family will receive friends 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Tuesday July 6, 2010 at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven.
