The Chocowinity 16U all-stars made the most of their summer as they won the Babe Ruth District 6 championship before placing third in the state tournament.
At the District 6 tournament the all-stars went undefeated as they topped Washington 6-2 and Jamesville 10-0, before beating Washington in the championship game 6-0. Savannah Mumford and Katie Laughinghouse were named co-MVPs. Mumford won all three games, while Laughinghouse batted over .700 in the tournament. Their efforts helped Chocowinity advance to the state tournament for only the third time in history.
At the state tournament the all-stars ripped off three straight wins by beating Camden 7-3, Washington 7-3 and Pamlico 4-1. The team’s first loss came at the hands of Henderson/Vance, who squeaked out a 3-2 victory over Chocowinity. The all-stars fell again in the next game, getting edged out by Pamlico 5-4. Henderson/Vance eventually topped Pamlico in the title game, while the Chocowinity all-stars placed third. The all-stars were invited to play in the Southeast Regional tournament in Florida, but were unable to accept the invitation due to prior commitments.
