Five local girls were honored in the 10th annual Bobby Andrews scholarship banquet on Saturday.
Destiny Tyson, Holly Davenport, Crystal Ireland, Sarah Mayo, and Shonnita Mciver were honored in a brief ceremony at the Susie Gray McConnell Sports Complex. Two other girls also received scholarships but missed the ceremony due to prior concerns.
A local radio talk show gave an invocation for the ceremony. Sarah Mayo also read a note before the ceremony giving tribute to Andrews.
Each scholarship recipient must have played in the Washington Girls Softball League for four years and maintained a 2.5 GPA
Recipients are selected through an application process detailing their career goals.
Recipients attending Beaufort Community College receive $1,200 in financial aid. Recipients attending other schoos are awarded $500. Andrews’ program has helped over seventy total recipients over the years
Crystal Ireland will be attending Martin Community College this coming fall. She is enrolled in physical therapist assistant program. She has played softball for nine years.
Ireland has known Andrews since she was seven years old and thanked him for his support.
“He is a very sweet man and has always been right there whenever any of us needed him. He means everything in the world to me.”
Andrews explained his connection to the banquet.
“It really means a lot to me when they come up to me and thank me. I really would like to help all of them that apply”
