Mr. Charlie Jackson “C.J.”Brooks, Jr., age 83, a resident of 5593 Terra Ceia Road, Pantego, NC died Friday August 27, 2010 at the Pungo District Hospital.
A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday August 29, 2010 at Free Union Free Will Baptist Church of Pinetown officiated by Rev. Woodrow Freeze. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Jimmy Council, David Council, Daniel Paul, Louis Paul, III, Allen Cuthrell, Hollis Brooks and Jamie Council will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. C.J. was born in Beaufort County on December 7, 1926 son of the late Charlie Jackson Brooks, Sr. and the late Annie Eliza Tetterton Brooks. He married the former Frances Gray Boyd on October 5 1948 who preceded him in death on May 29, 2010. Mr. C.J. was a 1944 graduate of Pantego High School and served his country in the U.S. Navy. Mr. C.J. was a farmer who also had worked with Weyerhaeuser and as a driver and mentor with the Beaufort County Developmental Center of Washington. His garden raised produce will be missed by his family and community. He was a member of Free Union Free Will Baptist Church where he had served on the Deacon Board and served as a former adult Sunday School Teacher. Mr. C.J. was a former member of Pantego Volunteer Fire Department and the American Legion Post of Belhaven.
Survivors include four daughters: Judy Council and her husband Robbie of Belhaven, Darlene Paul and her husband Richard of Pinetown, Diana Paul and her husband Louis Wilson of Pinetown and Glenda Cuthrell and her husband Brian of Belhaven; a son: Charlie J. Brooks, III and his wife Brenda of Pantego; a brother: Howard Brooks of Virginia Beach, VA; five sisters: Rachel Hardison and Lois Slade both of Pantego, Elva Respess of Chester, VA, Nelva Swinson of Jamesville and Patsy Rose of Pantego; eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Mr. C.J. was preceded in death by a grandson: Owen Brooks; two sisters Mildred Brooks and Mary Cuthrell and a brother: Frank Brooks.
The family will receive friends 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday August 28, 2010 at Free Union Free Will Baptist Church and at other times at the home.
