GREENVILLE — East Carolina point guard Brock Young has been named to the 2010-11 Preseason All-Conference USA team as voted upon by the league’s 12 head coaches.
A year ago, Young earned third-team all-conference honors after leading C-USA in assists per game (5.5) for a second straight season. He also ranked among the league leaders in three additional categories, finishing second in free throw percentage (.819), sixth in scoring (15.5) and 10th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3). He currently ranks seventh in career assist average (5.26) and needs just 154 more to set the conference career assists record.
Young became the Pirates’ all-time assists leader last season and moved within 67 points of becoming the 24th 1,000-point scorer in school history. He needs 46 makes from the charity stripe to become ECU’s career leader for free throws made.
Young is one of four seniors comprising the preseason all-conference team. Classmates Randy Culpepper of UTEP, who was voted the league’s Preseason Player-of-the-Year, Gary Flowers of Southern Miss and Justin Hurtt of Tulsa, join him. The lone junior on the first team is Memphis swingman Wesley Witherspoon.
The preseason all-conference second team features 2009-10 all-conference selections Papa Dia of SMU, Aaron Johnson of UAB and Jeremy Williams of UTEP, 2010 All-Freshman Team member Arsalan Kazemi of Rice and a Memphis newcomer in freshman Will Barton.
ECU opens the 2010-11 season at home with an exhibition game against Montreat on Nov. 5. Season tickets are available and may be purchased online at ECUPirates.com or by calling the ECU Athletic Ticket Office at 1-800-DIAL-ECU (342-5328).
