Son charged with shooting father

Washington police have charged Gary Curtis Upton Jr., 41, of 118 Lilley Road with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury for a shooting involving his father, Gary Curtis Upton Sr., Monday evening.
Gary Upton Sr. was in critical condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, while Gary Upton Jr. was placed in the Beaufort County Detention Center with a $100,000 bond pending a court appearance Tuesday, the Washington Police Department announced in a news release.
The exact cause of the shooting was still under investigation, and further details had not been released by the police department as of Tuesday evening.
No other people are believed to be involved in the shooting, and additional charges may be filed pending the outcome of the investigation, police said.
At 8:23 p.m. Monday, Washington police, fire, and rescue personnel responded to a report of a family disturbance in the area of Lilley Road and U.S. Highway 264.
Upon arrival, officers secured the scene and located the victim, who suffered from an apparent gunshot wound.
Washington fire-rescue personnel transported him to Beaufort County Medical Center and later to PCMH. His injuries were described as “life threatening” by investigators.
