Mrs. Marjorie Payne Gibbs Carawan, age 85, a resident of 689 Latham St., Belhaven, died Tuesday, October 19, 2010.
Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday October 23, 2010 at Oakdale Cemetery and will be conducted by Pastor Allen Harmon.
Mrs. Carawan was born in Hyde County on March 11, 1925 to the late Carroll Dalton Gibbs and Lyda Bridgeman Gibbs. She was a graduate of Swan Quarter High School, attended Miller-Mott College in Norfolk, Virginia and Beaufort Community College. She was a bookkeeper for Voliva Furniture, Voliva Hardware, the Town of Belhaven, Silus Braddy Tax Accountant, Pittard Perry &Crone Inc./CPA and Clark Oil Company. She was a member of the Rose Bay Missionary Baptist Church in Hyde County. Mrs. Carawan married Chesley H. Carawan who preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Phillip W. Sherman and his wife Gayle of Belhaven; one brother, Carroll Dalton “C.D.” Gibbs, Jr. and wife Michael of Rose Bay; three grandchildren, Angel Hudnell and husband Anthony of Belhaven, Phil Sherman and wife Paula of Pantego, Amber Bowen and husband Tony of Robersonville and six great grandchildren, Matthew Hudnell, Natalie Hudnell, Caleb Sherman, Caroline Sherman, Kirbyanne Sherman and Kayleigh Sherman.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Friday October 22, 2010 at Paul Funeral Home of Belhaven and other times at the home of Phillip and Gayle Sherman, 1102 W. Pungo St., Belhaven.
