WILSON— U.S. Rep. G.K. Butterfield has retained his House seat in northeastern North Carolina.
Unofficial results show Butterfield won his fourth two-year term Tuesday, defeating Ashley Woolard in the 1st Congressional District.
Butterfield is a former state Supreme Court justice from Wilson who succeeded fellow Democrat Frank Ballance in 2004 in the predominantly Democratic district. Butterfield serves on the powerful House Armed Services Committee. He was an adviser to Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential race and has been one of the president’s staunchest supporters.
Woolard is from Washington and is a vice president at his family’s insurance company.
