The Washington football team saw its two-game winning streak snapped last Friday as it fell 38-13 to Coastal Conference rival South Central.
As the Pam Pack enter its regular season finale against conference foe West Carteret, coach Sport Sawyer would like to see his team begin a streak of a different kind.
Washington (5-5, 4-2) enters this week’s showdown locked in a tie for second place with the Patriots (7-3, 4-2) as well as D.H. Conley (4-2, 4-6), whom Washington beat in Week 10. Sawyer said in order for his team to be victorious tonight it must play good football for four consecutive quarters.
“It’s a real big game as far as playoff seeding and overall conference standings. Right now it is us, West Carteret and Conley (who will play South Central tonight) who are all fighting for a second place seed,” Sawyer said. “We have not put together a four-quarter game all year, and that is what we have to do. We need to play hard from the beginning to the end. No lulls. We need to play all four quarters. … We haven’t done that this year but I think if we can do that we will be a pretty good football team. The guys have had a good week of practice and I think this will be the week we will do it.”
There is no doubt the Pam Pack will have to put forth a solid effort for the entire game against West Carteret as it boasts a talented roster.
“They’re having a good year, they have a running back that has over 1,500 yards this year and is real good running back,” Sawyer said. “They are averaging about 28-30 points per game out of the wing-T. They are a team we have to be focused on.”
The Patriots running back John Papillon has had an outstanding season so far as he leads the team with 1,623 rushing yards thanks to a whopping 9-yards per carry average. Papillon is also no stranger to the end zone as he has been there 25 times this season.
One thing that might work in the Pam Pack’s favor is that have already played one wing-T team in Conley, and then faced a South Central team that also sports a ground-based attack.

“It will be the second wing-T team in three weeks,” Sawyer said. “The defense seems to be picking it up well because we kind of run some wing-T stuff tool.”
The bottom line for the Pam Pack is it must contain Papillon.
“They have a good offensive line as well, we just have to make sure we gang tackle tonight,” Sawyer said. “We have to stop the cutback lanes because he does a good job of cutting back. If not he will cut back and he has speed to take it to the house anytime.”
