Mr. Hallet Hal Thomas Latham, 83, of New Bern, NC, passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, where he underwent treatment for Leukemia.
He was born on September 14, 1927 in Washington, NC, to Moye and Hilda Latham. In addition to his parents, Hal was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Lena Askew Latham, his brother Lloyd W Latham, sisters Frances Waters and Hilda Moye Latham. He has three children, Hallet Keith Latham and wife, Lori Dostal of Brighton, MI, Kim Latham Moseley and husband, Grady of Charlotte, NC, and Karla Latham Grogan and husband, John of New Bern. His surviving brother is Dalton E. Latham and wife Frances, aunts Mattie W. Black, Mary W. Mills and uncle, Harold Woolard. Hal was loved and adored by his grandchildren, Karl Gwaltney, Kerry Latham, Katy Gwaltney, Cameron Moseley, Jackie Latham and Latham Moseley.
Hal was in the insurance business for 35 years. He loved his work and continued to go into the office on a regular basis until his recent illness. Hal received great pleasure from volunteering. He was a founding member of River Bend Baptist Church serving actively in many capacities including the deaconate, Sunday school, the choir and led the nursing home ministry. Hal was a charter member of Twin Rivers Lions Club and was an active member for many years. He also volunteered as a gray lad at Carolina East Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 13 at River Bend Baptist Church with the Rev. Steven Simpson and the Rev. Grady Moseley officiating. Burial will follow the service at Greenleaf Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Pollock-Best Funeral Home.
