Mrs. Burchie Smith Johnston, age 88, a resident of 128 Pungo Trail, Belhaven, died Thursday, November 11, 2010 at Britthaven Nursing Center of Washington.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 13, 2010 at the First Christian Church of Belhaven officiated by Rev. Burke Holland and Pastor Greg Nunley. Burial will be at a later date at Belhaven Community Cemetery.
Mrs. Johnston was born in Winsteadville on May 11, 1922, daughter of the late Bonner Mayo Smith and the late Lucy Mae Winstead Smith. She was a 1939 graduate of Belhaven High School, a 1944 graduate of ECTC, the former East Carolina Teachers College, and completed her graduate study at the University of N.C. at Greensboro. She was a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority. She married Russell Johnston on February 6, 1943 who survives. Mrs. Johnston was the Home Economics Teacher at John A. Wilkinson High School, retiring after thirty years training the youth of the Belhaven area. She was a member of First Christian Church of Belhaven.
Surviving along with Mrs. Johnston’s husband Russell of the home is a daughter: Carley Sowder and her husband Joel of Belhaven; two sons: Russ Johnston and his wife Laura of Raleigh and Arthur Johnston and his wife Wanda of Greenville; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Johnston was preceded in death by two brothers: Wilton Smith and Mayo Smith.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour at First Christian Church of Belhaven and other times at the home.
