Mr. G.D. Elliott, Jr., of Bath, North Carolina passed away at his home on Veterans Day November 11, 2010.
A funeral service was held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 13, 2010 from the Chapel of Paul Funeral Home of Washington with Kent Gurganus and Brian Oliver officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. His grandsons, grandsons-in-law and his nephews George D. Elliott, IV, Mark Elliott, Benjamin Bohrer, Nathan Burns, Casey George, James McGee, David H. Elliott, III and George Howard Elliott will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bath Ruritan Club.
Mr. Elliott was born in Bath, North Carolina on June 12, 1924 to the late George Delma Elliott, Sr. and Grace Lloyd Elliott. He was a 1940 graduate of Bath High School. On January 19, 1947, Mr. Elliott married the former Hilma Cordon, who survives. Mr. Elliott served his country in World War II in the U.S. Navy serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of the South Pacific as a machinist aboard Landing Craft Flotilla Flagship #571. He was a farmer and for 25 years served as the Bath Postmaster retiring in 1992. Mr. Elliott was an active member of the Bath Ruritan Club for over 50 years, having served two terms as club president. He was also a member of the Belhaven Masonic Lodge # 509 and the Beaufort County American Legion Post #15. Mr. Elliott was a lifelong member of Athens Chapel Church of Christ where he served as an Elder, Deacon and was a past Chairman of the Church Board. Mr. Elliott was a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine given by the Governor of North Carolina. Mr. Elliott was a lifelong "yellow dog" Democrat and had served as Chairman of the Beaufort County Board of Elections for 20 years.
In addition to his wife, Hilma, of the home, Mr. Elliott is survived by three children: George Elliott, III and wife Peggy, Ilene Elliott McClain and husband Pat and Teresa Elliott Bohrer and husband Tom all of Bath, NC, eight grandchildren: George Elliott, IV and wife Cassandra, Mark Elliott and wife Khansas, Olivia McClain Burns and Husband Nathan and Hope Bohrer all of Bath, NC, Amanda McClain George and husband Casey of Wilmington, NC, Andrea McClain McGee and husband James of Washington, NC, Benjamin Bohrer and wife Christy of Oxford, NC and Hannah Bohrer Oliver and husband Brian of Raleigh, NC, four great-grandchildren: Emily and Elaine Waters, Tyson George, Hendrix Elliott and Baby Girl George and Baby Girl Bohrer, who are both expected soon, two brothers: Horace Elliott and wife Betty of Bath, NC and Myron Elliott and wife Elizabeth of Belhaven, NC, a sister: Ethel Hickman and husband John of Rockville, MD and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Elliott is preceded in death by his step-mother, Nora Bowen Elliott and three sisters Evelyn Elliott, Christine Tarr and Marie Mason.
The family receive friends Friday, November 12, 2010 from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and other times at the home located at 1656 Creek Road, Bath, NC 27808.
