James Alton Ginn, Sr., 68, of Plymouth died Saturday, November 20, 2010 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
Born November 28, 1941 in Goldsboro, NC, he was the son of the late Alton Lee Ginn and Druegay Ginn and was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Allen Ginn. James grew up in Hookerton, NC and graduated from Hookerton High School in May 1959. James and Linda Dail were married on April 17, 1960.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for eight years from 1959-1967. He then worked as an NC Wildlife Officer for 10 years. During this period of time, he obtained a commercial pilots license and flew with the NC Wildlife Resource Commission as an Aerial Law Enforcement Officer and did some crop dusting with B&L Aviation. From the years 1974-1977, he was corporate pilot for First Colony Farms and also held an additional job as Personnel Manager. From 1977-1980, James owned Three Rivers Sport Shop in Plymouth. In 1980 until present, James was employed by East Carolina Supply Co. In 1988, he became president of East Carolina Supply Co. and in 1997, he became co-owner of East Carolina Supply Company with business partner Walter Roberts while remaining president of East Carolina Supply Company. James served on the Washington County Hospital Board from 1995-1998. He also served First Union Bank Board and Wachovia Bank Board in 1997 in Elizabeth City. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by Washington County Jaycees in 1971. In 1972, he was awarded the NC Outstanding Young Man of the Year Award by the Governor of North Carolina. He enjoyed flying, fishing, cooking, and spending time with family and friends at Lake Phelps.
His family includes his wife, Linda Dail Ginn of Plymouth, NC; sons, James “Jimmy” Alton Ginn, Jr. and wife, Christy of Plymouth, NC and Jeffery Lee Ginn and wife, C.K. of Pinetown, NC; brother, Charles W. Ginn of Fayetteville, NC; grandchildren, Emily Ginn, Josh Ginn, Zach Ginn, Jake Ginn and Chelsea Ginn.
Memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at 2 p.m. at First Christian Church, Plymouth with Reverend V. Tom Banks officiating. Family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Christian Church.
