Mr. Bingham Burle “Bing” Mitchell, Jr., age 64, a resident of 920 Isabella Ave. Extension, North Shores, died Monday November 22, 2010 at Beaufort County Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday November 27, 2010 at the First Christian Church of Washington officiated by Rev. Amanda Hesbach and Derik Davis.
Coach Mitchell was born on January 19, 1946 to the late Bingham Burle Mitchell and Violet Drew Mitchell. He was a 1964 graduate of Bertie Senior High School and a 1968 graduate of East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education. On April 26, 2000, he married the former Brenda Denby, who survives. Coach Mitchell had a distinguished career as a teacher, coach and athletic director for 36 years working at Bertie, Bath, Washington, Northside and South Central High Schools. Coach Mitchell served as an assistant coach for the Bertie Senior High School State Championship Basketball team, was an assistant coach for the North Carolina East-West All Star game, Washington Daily News Coach of the Year for two years, he was inducted into the Washington High School Walk of Fame and was Head Coach for the Northside High School 2-A State Runner-up in Football. Through his work, he positively impacted and served as a role model for thousands of student-athletes. Coach Mitchell was a gold member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association having held various positions within the association, was co-founder of the Outer Banks Football Coaching Clinic, was a member of the Pirate Club and was a member of First Christian Church of Washington.
In addition to his wife, Coach Mitchell is survived by two sons: Keith Waters Mitchell and wife Carla Alligood Mitchell and Kevin Drew Mitchell and wife Jennifer Gautier Mitchell all of Washington, NC two sisters: Loretta M. Eichhorn and husband Charles of Greensboro, NC and Becky M. Mann of Lillington, NC, four grandchildren: Dawson Hatton Mitchell, Taylor Drew Mitchell, Wayland Bingham Mitchell and Caroline Gail Mitchell all of Washington, NC and six nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday November 26, 2010 from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Paul Funeral Home of Washington.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, 1209 Brown Street, Washington, NC 27889.
