Mildred Tanner Elks

Mrs. Mildred Tanner Elks, 74, died Friday, Nov. 26, 2010. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the mausoleum at Pinewood Memorial Park. Mrs. Elks, daughter of the late James Raymond, Sr. and Mildred Price Tanner, was a native of Nash County and lived in Washington for 11 years before moving to Pitt County where she had been a resident for the last 33 years.
Mrs. Elks began her career with Carolina Telephone and Telegraph in 1955 in Washington as an operator. She moved to Greenville in 1966 where she served as an operator and then service assistant, transferring to Rocky Mount in 1983 where she served as a clerk in the central ticket investigation department until her retirement with Sprint in 1992 after nearly 39 years of service. She was a member of Trinity Free Will Baptist Church and the Adult 6 Sunday School Class since 1970. An avid Tarheel fan, she spent many hours watching Tarheel basketball.
In addition to being preceded in death by her parents, she was also predeceased by brothers, James R. Tanner, Jr. and Edwin B. Tanner.
Surviving, loving husband and caregiver of 45 years, Coy Lee Elks, Sr., son, Coy Lee Elks, Jr. and his wife, Paula, and two grandchildren, Jordan Elks and Emily Elks all of Winterville; and brothers, Bill Tanner, Sr. of La Grange and Fritz Tanner, Sr. of Washington.
