Joyce Ellen Cayton Whichard, age 73, went to be with her Lord Monday morning, November 29, 2010, in the Beaufort County Medical Center after a long illness.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, December 3, 2010, at Paul Funeral Home of Washington officiated by Reverend Edwin Hill. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews: Gary Newsom, Jr., Jonathan Baker, Matt Dixon, Joe Dixon and grandsons: Logan Whichard and Chase Whichard.
Joyce was born on July 22, 1937 in Pitt County to the late Mayhew and Lillian Dixon Cayton. She married the love of her life, William (Billy) Henry Whichard, Jr. on July 24, 1954. In 1955, she was chosen Miss Chocowinity of Chocowinity High School and graduated in the spring of that year. She went on to work with her husband and father-in-law on the family farm and in the Whichard Beach business until her retirement. Early on, she was actively involved with Billy in their love of fishing. She enriched her life by being active in sewing (especially for her three younger sisters and daughter), ceramics, painting and her most cherished craft, quilting.
Surviving is Joyce’s loving husband of 56 years, William H. Whichard, Jr.; her loving daughter and “longtime caregiver”: Melody Whichard Drew and her husband Dayton of Burgaw; a son: William H. Whichard III of Chocowinity, his son Logan and special friend Gerri Gottwalt; a son: Jeffery W. Whichard of Novato, California, wife Karla, son Chase and stepson Noah; three sisters: Pat C. Newsom (Gary) and Joan C. Baker (Wayne) both of Chocowinity and Catherine C. Dixon (Tom) of Washington; two brothers: Bobby B. Cayton (Norene) of Pointblank, Texas and Mayhew Cayton, Jr. (Marie) of Oil City, Louisiana; a special sister-in-law Ann Cayton of Arcadia, Louisiana and numerous aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins. Additionally, Johnnie and Linda Lewis of Chocowinity shared many wonderful times with the family and were lifelong friends.
The family will receive friends 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 2, 2010, at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and at other times at the home.
