Mr. Avalon Hall “Al” Swain, Jr., also known as Spanky, age 75, a resident of 55 Inlet Way, Portside, Chocowinity, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010 at his home.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010 at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, conducted by Pastor Brian Miles. Members of the Portside Owners Association will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Swain was born in Beaufort County on Aug. 20, 1935. He was the son of the late Avalon Hall Swain, Sr. and Reva Louise Leggett Swain. Mr. Swain graduated from Washington High School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Swain attended East Carolina University and graduated from the Carolina School of Banking at Chapel Hill. He was assistant Vice-President of Installment Loans at the National Bank of Commerce in Norfolk, Va. Later, Mr. Swain was assistant Vice-President of Commercial Lending at First Citizens Bank in Havelock and Wilson. After his banking career, he owned and operated Bargain House Furniture in Wilson and Washington. Mr. Swain was a past Mason and Shriner.
On May 30, 1979, Mr. Swain married the former Barbara Fleming White, who survives. They enjoyed thirty one years of marriage.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Michelle King Spinella and husband, Ernie of Black Creek; two sons, Avalon Hall Swain III and wife, Rosemary of Charlotte, Michael Raymond Swain of Rocky Mount and four grandchildren, Victoria and Joseph Swain, Cameron and Colin Spinella.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010 at Paul Funeral Home, Washington, and other times at the home.
