Mrs. Eldean C. Gerard

Mrs. Eldean Calloway Gerard, age 91, a resident of 808 East 7th St., Washington, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday evening, Nov. 30, 2010.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church in Washington officiated by Rev. Lee Kinney and Rev. Daryl Evans. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Her grandsons: Richie Gerard, III, Steven Lee, Jr., Michael Lee, Shawn Batts, Josh Batts, Galen Niederhauser, Jim Anderson and Wes Carroll will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Gerard was born in Jamesville, NC, on Sept. 5, 1919, daughter of the late Fred Leroy Calloway and Betty Virginia Goddard Calloway. She was a graduate of Jamesville High School and a 1944 graduate of Tayloe Hospital School of Nursing. She was a very dedicated registered nurse in service to patients and families at Tayloe Hospital and Beaufort County Hospital. Throughout her nursing career and afterwards, she was affectionately known as “Big Calloway.” Mrs. Gerard was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a former member of Circle #5. She volunteered with the Red Cross, March of Dimes and Cancer Drive.
Mrs. Gerard is survived by her children: Richard E. Gerard, Jr. and wife, Sandy; Shirley “Jean” Lee and husband, Steve; and Ginny Gerard Batts, all of Washington; her grandchildren: Richie Gerard, III, Shawn Batts, Steven Lee, Deanna Anderson, Michael Lee, Alison Carroll, Josh Batts and Jeanne Niederhauser; her great-grandchildren: Miller Lee, Macon Lee, Davis Lee, Maddox Lee, Gabe Niederhauser, Cate Calloway Lee, Cutler Lee, Carter Gerard Anderson, Reese Katherine Anderson and Emma Claire Carroll. She is survived by a very special sister, Juanita Jackson of Washington, known as “Little Calloway,” and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard “Earl” Gerard, Sr. on Sept. 9, 1996 and eight brothers and sisters.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, neighbor and friend to many. The family wishes to express their appreciation to her caregivers, Jewel Chesson, Josephine Griffin and Rashonda “P.T.” Griffin.
The family will receive friends 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2nd at Paul Funeral Home in Washington and other times at the home of her daughter, Jean Lee, located at 123 W. River Acres Road, Washington, NC.
