Rev. William R. Dick Barber, 75, went to his Heavenly Home on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010. He passed away at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born Nov. 1, 1935 in Little Rock, Arkansas, and grew up in Dade City, Florida. He proudly served in the Marine Corps, and for his entire enlistment was stationed at Cherry Point. During that time, he met and married his wife of 55 years, Gail Hamilton Barber. After serving in the Marine Corps, he became an artist and self-taught, self-employed screen printer of 35 years. In 1955, he was licensed as a Baptist minister by Tabernacle Baptist Church. He was also a teacher, deacon, and member of the choir and a quartet. Serving as a supply and interim pastor for many Churches in the Atlantic Baptist Churches, he was ordained in 1990 and also served as a Bivocational Pastor first at Oriental Baptist Church and then South Creek Baptist Church in Aurora from which he had to resign in October 2010 for health reasons.
He is survived by his wife, Gail; son, Steven Barber, daughter, Gretchen Heckman; grandchildren, Rebecca, Adam, and Ethan Heckman, all of New Bern; and sister, Louise Gude of Dade City, Florida.
He loved his family but it was always God first and family second.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010 at Tabernacle Baptist Church in New Bern. Visitation will be at the church following the service.
