Mrs. Helen Lewis Wolfe Boyd, 89, a resident of Mayview Convalescent Center and formerly of Independence Village, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011, at Rex Hospital.
Born in Washington, N.C., to the late Robert M. Wolfe and Cassandra E. Lewis, Helen graduated from Washington High School and from East Carolina Teachers College, Greenville, N.C. The U.S. Pension Service in Washington, D.C., employed her after graduation. On July 8, 1944, she married Capt. Kenneth B. Boyd, USMCR, and was a homemaker for her family throughout his 30-year military career in the U.S. Marine Corps. They retired to Louisa, Va., where she became active in the community and friends. Later they moved to Raleigh to be closer to family members.
Her husband of 54 years, Col. Kenneth Boyd, USMC (Ret.) and a sister, Susan Wolfe Warren, preceded her in death.
Surviving are her son, Kenneth R. Boyd and wife Millie, of Pinehurst, N.C.; her daughter, Robin Boyd Mentha and husband John, of Raleigh; two grandsons, Chris and Tim Boyd, of Raleigh; a granddaughter, Cassie Mentha, also of Raleigh; and four great-granddaughters. Her sister, Lewellyn Wolfe Day, of Washington, N.C. and husband Ted also survive.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
