Mrs. Kathryn Credle Hodges, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at Fountains of The Albemarle in Tarboro where she had been a resident for the past four years. She was born on Sept. 19, 1933, the daughter of the late Mabel Joyner and Eugene Gratz Credle of Scranton. She was married to the love of her life, Edward Vernon Hodges, who preceded her in death on March 5, 2007.
Kathryn’s children were her nieces and nephews and all the children she taught for 35 years in the Edgecombe-Tarboro City and Craven County schools, retiring in 1990. She was Craven County’s nominee for national teacher of the year in 1975.
Kathryn was an active member of St. James United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing bridge, cooking and most of all, her family and friends. Not only will Kathryn be remembered as a beloved wife, sister, and aunt, she will also be remembered for all she did beyond the duty of a teacher for so many students through the years.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. James United Methodist Church. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. Epworth United Methodist Church Cemetery, Sladesville.
Kathryn is survived by a brother, Eugene Jackson “Jack” Credle, Belhaven: sisters, Hazel C. Doerter, Belhaven, Margaret C. Scott, Clayton, Faye C. Sadler, Winterville; brother-in-law, Duane Scott, sister-in-law, Millicent Bjurstrom, uncle, Edward D. “Sam” Credle, Greenville, nieces and nephews, Sue C. Rhem, Melody C. Williams, Kenneth D. Scott, Kathy S. Parrish, Kevin E. Scott, Lisa K. Sadler, Jim Reges, Rosemary Hedgepeth, Michael Bjurstrom and Deborah Leuth, as well as a host of great-nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at St. James United Methodist Church one hour prior to the service.
