Rickey Rick Lee Batts, a resident 3529 Jolly Road, Ayden, and formerly of Washington, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011. A graveside memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, at Pamlico Memorial Gardens in Washington officiated by Frederick Gooding.
Mr. Batts was born Dec. 20, 1952, in Newport News, Va., the son of Garry Tucker Batts, Sr. and Jennie Williamson Batts. Rick graduated from Kubasaki High School in Okinawa in 1971. He served his country in the United States Marine Corp, and was in the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, 7th Fleet. He attended Atlantic Christian College, now known as Barton College, from 1973 until 1975 where he was a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. Rick later went to East Carolina University and graduated in 1977 with a BS Degree in Science. After his graduation he worked with the Beaufort County Sheriffs Department as a Juvenile Officer. He taught at John A. Wilkinson HS in Belhaven from 1978 to 1979. Rick was employed with the NC Alcohol Law Enforcement Division and in 1981 became a member of the NC State Bureau of Investigation as an undercover narcotics agent. He was a member of VFW post 6088.
Along with his parents he is survived by two sons, Shawn Patrick Batts and Joshua Josh Tucker Batts both of Greenville; a brother Garry Tucker Batts, Jr. a sister, Charlotte Degarmo both of Newport News, Virginia and three nieces.
