Mrs. Jo McGugan Richardson, age 71, a resident of Washington, died Monday, February 14, 2011 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, February 17, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church, Washington, conducted by Rev. Lee Kinney and Rev. Daryl Evans.
Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, February 18, 2011 at Oak Ridge Cemetery in St. Paul’s.
Jo was born in Robeson County on January 25, 1940, the oldest daughter of the late Daniel B. McGugan and the late Ernestine Willis McGugan. She was a 1958 graduate of St. Paul’s High School and married her high school sweetheart, Bill, on December 21, 1958. After beginning their lives together in Raeford, N.C. they later moved to Whiteville, N.C. before settling in Washington, N.C. in 1969.
Throughout her life, Jo always found a way to help others. She gave her time, her creative talents, her good cooking, and her friendship freely. Jo took on many volunteer roles throughout her life – she served as Welcome Wagon hostess in Washington, Girl Scout District Cookie Chairman, organized Arthritis Support Group meetings in Greenville, delivered Meals on Wheels, and served on various committees at her church. Jo worked for several years at the craft store in Washington but was best known for her work as a seamstress. But, most of all, her passion was caring for her children and grandchildren. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Circle V. Jo played bridge with the same group of ladies for over thirty years.
Surviving with her husband, William “Bill” Richardson of the home; two daughters, Debbie Richardson Johnson and husband, Dr. Michael D. Johnson of Goldsboro, Cindy Richardson Sayce and husband, Karl E. Sayce of Pinehurst; a son, Bobby Richardson and wife, Amy of Atlanta, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Jamie and Jackie Johnson, Katie and Sarah Sayce, Kyle and Kate Richardson; two sisters, Ruth Sports and husband, Mitchell of Raeford, N.C., Nancy McGugan of Lumberton; two brothers, Danny McGugan and wife, Jane of Shannon, N.C., Duncan McGugan and wife, Joy of Lumberton; sister in law, Lydia Blackburn and husband, Ronald of Newport News, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Thursday after the service at the First Presbyterian Church.
