Alice Rebecca Duryea van der Veer

Mrs. Alice D. van der Veer, age 85, a resident of East 11th Street, Washington, N.C., died Sunday, March 13, 2011, at her residence. A service will be held Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at 7 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness of Washington, officiated by Larry Minor.  Mrs. van der Veer will be interred at the New Cemetery in Somerville, N.J. with a memorial service at the cemetery on South Bridge Street on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at 1 p.m.

Mrs. van der Veer was born on June 17, 1925, in Somerset County, N.J., daughter of the late Augustus and Nanette Marie Delores Rouxel Duryea. She was a graduate of Somerville High School in N.J. in 1943, attended Colby College in Maine, and graduated from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. She was the secretary of Harleysville Insurance Company in Somerville, N.J. She retired from Somerset County Library. She married Henry Matthew van der Veer on Nov. 27, 1948, who preceded her in death in 1990. Mrs. van der Veer was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness of Washington and in the regular pioneer service with her congregation.

Survivors include three daughters, Laura D. van der Veer of Washington, N.C., Rebecca van der Veer Bertany and husband, Robert, of Towanda, Pa., and Katherine van der Veer Chase and husband, Robert, of Eustis, Fla. Other survivors include six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Nanette Craig and three brothers, Augustus Duryea, John Lewis Duryea and Charles Sylvester Duryea.

The family will receive friends following the service at her residence. Memorial contributions may be made to Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.
