Children will be the real winners

When it comes to cooking up support for the local Let the Kids Play Free campaign, it’s hard to beat the upcoming Faith Community Cook-off and Picnic slated for June 4.
The Let the Kids Play Free campaign, supported by the Washington-Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is about making the cost of playing youth sports more affordable, with the ultimate goal of children being able to play sports at no cost to them. Because of fees required to play some sports, some children don’t get to play because they cannot afford to do so.
The Faith Community Cook-off and Picnic is more than just another fundraiser. It will bring segments of the community together in friendly competitions involving the cooking of chicken, barbecue, casseroles, desserts, vegetables, salads, mac-and-cheese and iced tea. The community will benefit in at least two ways — a worthy caused being helped and a chance to dine on what are bound to be some of the best dishes around.
Helping the local Let the Kids Play Free effort by participating in or attending the Faith Community Cook-off and Picnic could pay off. A Cary woman, who learned about the campaign while surfing the Internet and who works for Woodmen of the World, has pledged that she and her employer will donate $2,500 to the campaign if the Faith Community Cook-off and Picnic raises $2,500 for Let the Kids Play Free. That’s a generous offer.
We can help the community and its children by supporting the Faith Community Cook-off and Picnic and Let the Kids Play Free. It really doesn’t matter which teams win the cook-off competitions because the real winners will be the community’s children.
