Arthur Ervin Hassell

Arthur Ervin Hassell, 92, a resident of Roper, died Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at Chowan Hospital in Edenton.
Born April 29, 1919, in Washington County, he was the son of the late William J. Hassell and Sarah Spruill Hassell and was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Craddock Hassell; sisters, Gertie H. Marriner, Louise H. Tarkington, Ruth H. Tarkenton, Marion Jenette Hassell, Dora Hassell; brothers, Nathan Hassell, David Hassell, Earl Hassell, Thomas Jordan Hassell, Elbert Hassell, Robert Hassell, Marvin Hassell and Lester Hassell.
Mr. Hassell was a retired service manager with House Chevrolet and member of Roper Pentecostal Holiness Church. He served as Chief of Roper Fire Department for 17 years before his retirement, a Roper Town Council member, Mayor Pro Tem and member of Albemarle/Newland Hunting Club.
His family includes his daughter, Betty H. Dowd and husband Jerry of Winston-Salem, N.C.; sons, James E. Hassell and wife Kathryn of Roper, N.C., Charles R. Hassell and wife Katie of Mackeys, N.C.; sisters, Juanita H. Oliver of Roper, N.C. and Patricia H. Hudson of Suffolk, Va.; grandchildren, J. Michael Hassell, Susan and Robert Allen, J. Scott and Jennifer Dowd, Jeremy Dowd, Chester and Sharon Cooper, Cynda and Tony Kroll; great-grandchildren, Jordan Margaret Allen, Aniston Parker Keiger Dowd, Kathryn A. Kroll, Brianna Cooper, Chester Cooper, James Cooper, Christopher Allen, Megan Allen and many loving nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Roper Pentecostal Holiness Church, Roper, with the Rev. Bobby Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 10, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Maitland Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
