Two bands will perform at the Turnage Theater as the BoCO (Beaufort County) Summer Concert Series continues on Saturday, July 23.

Showtime is 8 p.m., and tickets are $12 each.

The series is a collaboration between the Turnage, the Beaufort County Traditional Music Association and the Beaufort County Arts Council.

The concert will open with the Barnraisers from Wilmington. Last seen onstage in Beaufort County in April 2009, the Barnraisers have been voted Wilmington’s Best Band by Currents magazine two years in a row.

After taking a short break, the Barnraisers, better known as Tiff and Adam Forsythe, will be back in action with new songs, energized by their time away from the stage. They have been described as honky-tonk spitfires delivering mountain music with a wink and a chuckle. Drawing influences from early bluegrass, honky-tonk, and country music, the Barnraisers are sure to get the evening off with a blast.

Headliner Katy Mitchell hails from Ocracoke, and has been part of the island’s music scene since age 5 when she danced barefoot to her parents’ band, Molasses Creek.

After graduating from Ocracoke School, singing on-screen in the movie “Nights in Rodanthe” with Richard Gere and Diane Lane, and a six-month stint in California, Mitchell is back home from a cross-country bicycle trip with a new band consisting of Lou Castro, Jackie Willis, and Brett Evans.

According to BCAC Executive Director Joey Toler, both bands are worth the ticket price on their own.

“I was lucky to see the Barnraisers last month for their first gig in about a year, and they are better than ever,” Toler said. “And I got to see Katy Mitchell’s band at the ‘Music Across the Sound’ concert in Hyde County in March, and she was amazing. I knew then we had to get her onstage at the Turnage.”

The BoCO Summer Concert Series will conclude Aug. 6 with two bands — Uncle Mountain and Koostic Thang.
