A seminar to help people avoid being scammed is coming to Washington.

Beaufort County Scam Jam will be presented from 8:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 21 at the Grace Martin Harwell Senior Center (in the Peterson Building), 310 W. Main St. in downtown Washington.

The event is sponsored by AARP of North Carolina, the Eastern North Carolina Better Business Bureau and the Mid-East Commission’s Area Agency on Aging. Attendees will learn about identity theft, Medicare fraud, investment scams and recent scams in the area, according to a flier publicizing the event.

The event is endorsed and supported by N.C. Attorney General Roy Cooper’s office and the office of N.C. Secretary of State Elaine Marshall. Those offices are expected to have representatives at the seminar.
