Mrs. Ellen Christine Asby Smith, age 75, a resident of 1675 Old Bath Highway, died Sunday, August 21, 2011 at Beaufort County Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Asbury United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Sam Grist, III.  Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

The following will serve as pallbearers: Ronald Smith, James D. Asby, Dwayne Asby, Ashley Alligood, Tim Little and Todd Little. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Holland, Chad Asby, Todd Asby and Billy Boyd.

Mrs. Smith was born in Pitt County on April 4, 1936. She was the daughter of the late James Dawson Asby and Lossie Belle Harris Asby. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and previously worked for Dr. William E. Kidd for over 10 years.

Mrs. Smith was a very active member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. She was a Circle member, Choir member, and served on numerous committees in the church. Mrs. Smith volunteered at the N.C. Estuarium, for the American Cancer Society and Eagles Wings. She held the polls for several elections.

On June 25, 1967, she married Donald Gray Smith, who survives.

Surviving with her husband are her son, Charles Dawson Smith and his wife, Susan of Rocky Mount; two grandsons, Nigel Gray Smith of Honolulu, Hawaii, Trevor Wayne Smith of Rocky Mount; four brothers, Bucky Asby of Franklin, NC, Gene L. Asby and Reginald W. Asby both of Washington; James Dawson Asby, Jr. of Richmond, Va.; sister, Margaret Asby Holland of Washington; twin sister, Helen A. McRoy of Washington; devoted aunt, Myrtle Harris Whitfield of Williamsburg, Va.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by a son, Roderick Gray Smith.

The family received friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, August 22, 2011 at Paul Funeral Home and Crematory of Washington and other times at the home.
