Better things to do

Maybe our state’s voters should have a say on whether a proposed same sex marriage amendment becomes law in North Carolina.
Then again, maybe leaders in the Legislature should find something better to do than explore a divisive social issue designed to electrify their base ahead of the 2012 election year.
Last we checked, the state’s unemployment rate was still around 10 percent, and many residents east of U.S. Highway 17 were still struggling to recover from Hurricane Irene.
Perhaps lawmakers would better serve the state by focusing on jobs and hurricane relief as opposed to the question of same sex marriage, which already is settled in state law that dictates marriage in North Carolina is between a man and a woman.
Yes, let the voters have their say.
But put first things first.
