Horace “H.H.” Harris

Mr. Horace Hilton “H.H.” Harris, age 102, a resident of 1000 Pike Road in the Pungo community of Pantego, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Free Will Baptist Church, Pike Road, Pantego, and will be conducted by the Rev. Keith Pelletier, Elder Kirk T. Harris and Rupert Wallace. Burial will follow in Davis Cemetery. Eddie Bryant Harris Jr., Terry Vance Harris, Daniel William Allen Jr., James Paul Allen, Ronald Glenn Boyd and Paul Lynn Boyd will serve as pallbearers. Jerry Sanders Harris, 4-H members, and N.C. State Alumni will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Harris was born on April 1, 1909, in Beaufort County to the late Jesse Bryant Harris and Jessie Truemella Harrison Harris. On Sept. 29, 1934, he married Ina Allen Harris, who preceded him in death. Mr. Harris was a 1933 graduate from N.C. State University with a degree in agriculture. He spent many pleasant and rewarding years working in Tyrell County as the county extension agent and chairman. For the first several years of his career, Mr. Harris helped promote the New Deal farm programs, and during World War II, most of his work centered on increasing production of food and assisting with some of the control programs. In 1950, Mr. Harris was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. In addition, Mr. Harris was a charter member of the Columbia Rotary Club, served as Chairman of the Rotary Youth Committee, was a longstanding member of the North Carolina Farm Bureau and the Pantego Ruritan Club. Mr. Harris was also a member of the Trinity Free Will Baptist Church, where he had served as deacon, trustee and treasurer.

Mr. Harris is survived by a daughter: Jacqueline Harris Wells of Virginia Beach, Va.; and grandchildren, Laura Wells Hodges, Gregory Wayland Gibbs, Reginald Hilton Gibbs and William Frank Wells II and wife Brandy; great-grandchildren, Ashley Lauren Hodges, Amanda Nicole Hodges, Tyler Frank Wells, Morgan Nicole Wells and Jack Everett Whelan-Gibbs.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Harris was preceded in death by brothers; Henry Clayton Harris Sr., Ferol Vance Harris and Wilmore Haden Harris; sisters, Ella Blanche Harris Padgett and Callie Alvire Harris Kinard; and a daughter, Myrtle Jane Gibbs.

The family offers special thanks to God for giving us loving caregivers: Linda and Charlie Davis, Kim and Brad Allen and the staff of Vintage Inn. Also surviving Mr. Harris are special friends: Andrew and Lynn Paul, Peggy Mann Gray and Martha Davis.

Mr. Harris will lie in state from noon until the funeral hour Saturday at Trinity Free Will Baptist Church. The family will receive friends other times at the home located at 1000 Pike Road, Pungo Community, Pantego, NC 27860.
