IRVING, Texas – Three East Carolina players were named to the All-Conference USA Football Teams, according to an announcement from the league office Tuesday. Senior outside receiver Lance Lewis and fellow senior Emanuel Davis, a defensive back, were named to the All-C-USA Second Team while freshman inside linebacker Jeremy Grove earned an honorable mention nod.
Lewis, a Preseason All-Conference USA honoree, ended the year 60 receptions for 600 yards in just nine games. He missed three of the final four contests with right foot and left knee injuries. Despite the shortened campaign, Lewis finished the regular season ranked third in the league in receptions per game (6.7) and seventh in receiving yards per contest (66.7).
The Concord, N.C., native ended his East Carolina career as the program record-holder with 22 touchdown catches. Lewis also ranks third on Pirates’ all-time receptions (149) chart and fifth in yards (1,716). Among all active FBS players, he stands fifth in career catches per game (6.8) and 11th in receiving yards per game (78.0).
In the home contest against in-state rival North Carolina, Lewis set a career high with 166 receiving yards, the sixth-highest total in ECU history. In the season opener against South Carolina, he caught 13 passes, one shy of the Pirate single-game record and tied for the most grabs in a contest by a C-USA receiver this season.
Davis, another Preseason All-Conference USA honoree, paced the team with seven pass breakups and eight passes defended while ranking third in solo tackles (29). In the final game of his career, at Marshall, he booked a season second-best seven tackles, including six stops in the opening half.
The Manteo product registered season highs with eight tackles and six solo stops against Southern Miss while tallying seven hits and forcing a fumble versus Tulane. Davis intercepted his first pass of the season, and ninth of his career, at Memphis. The nine interceptions are the 11th most in program history. A week earlier at Houston, he recorded his first career sack by bringing down Case Keenum for an 11-yard loss in the second quarter.
Grove turned in the best campaign by a freshman defensive player in East Carolina history. He paced the Pirates with 122 tackles, 45 solo hits, 77 assists, 85 stops on rushing plays and 36 passing tackles. Grove currently stands third in Conference USA and 10th among all FBS players with 11.1 stops per game and is the only freshman in FBS’s top 88 tacklers.
A native of Frederick, Md., Grove was credited with a career-high 15 stops against UAB in the Pirates’ league opener. The hits were the most in a game for an ECU player since Nick Johnson’s 16 at Marshall Oct. 3, 2009. Grove tallied his first career sack in the opening quarter versus UCF, dropping Jeff Godfrey for nine-yard loss. At Houston, Grove booked a personal second-best 14 stops and tallied 13 tackles versus Southern Miss.
The league’s individual awards will be released Wednesday, December 7. Conference USA will conclude its 2011 season by sending five teams to bowl games.
