Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell Cherry, age 83, a resident of Washington, died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Oakdale Cemetery in Washington conducted by Father Kevin Johnson.

Mrs. Cherry was born in Beaufort County on Dec. 14, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Harvey Lee Campbell and Etta Archbell Campbell. Mrs. Cherry graduated from East Carolina University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English.

She was a retired high school English teacher. Mrs. Cherry was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Cherry was married to Mervin Jarvis Cherry, who preceded her in death on July 18, 2004.

Mrs. Cherry is survived by her son, William Harvey Cherry and wife Sharon of Washington; and grandchildren, Gilbert Thomas Rutledge and wife Jennifer of Raleigh, Marianne Elizabeth Cherry, and Caroline Campbell Cherry both of Greenville.

The family received friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington.
