Dorothy Hill Jeffery

Mrs. Dorothy Hill Jeffery, 96, of Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home in Washington, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2012.

A native of Tampa, Fla., she also lived in Mt. Dora, Fla. She attended local Tampa schools and graduated from Florida State College for Women (FSU). She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and charter member of Zeta Phi Eta (Speech Therapists Honorary). She earned a Master’s Degree at Louisiana State University and was a Social Worker for the State of Florida in Tampa and Plant City. She later served as Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Hillsborough County. She was the Director of the H.B. Plant Museum at the University of Tampa where she was a member of The Chislers. She was also a charter member of the Altrusa International in Tampa. In 1991, she studied at Oxford University in London, England.

She is survived by daughter Barbara Allen Grimes and husband Samuel of Washington; daughter Marbury Allen Little and husband John of Metairie, La.; daughter Mary Jane Jeffery of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and son Brooks Jeffery Jr. and wife Leslie of Largo, Fla. She has six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Brooks Jeffery, preceded her in death.

A private family ceremony to celebrate her life will be held at a later date in Florida.
