Mrs. Janice Gaines, born Jan. 22, 1929, died peacefully on Thursday, March 1, 2012, in Vidant Medical Center Greenville, surrounded by her family and friends.

Born and raised in Warsaw, she was a graduate of Atlantic Christian College in Wilson. She taught music for 20 years at Jamesville School in Jamesville. During this time, she served as choir director at First United Methodist Church in Williamston. She had a rewarding career teaching the music that she so loved and influenced many students along the way. So many of her students have been part of a circle of lifelong friends and she valued her friends as much as her music.

She was a member of Jamesville Baptist Church and shared her musical talent and friendship as a volunteer at Vintage Inn Home of Williamston and Roanoke Landing Nursing and Rehabilitation of Plymouth.

She had a green thumb and prided herself in her garden.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dorman “Tom” Gaines and parents Allen Wells Draughon and Blanche Rogers Draughon.

She is survived by a son, Calvin Brown and wife Cindy of Jamesville; and a daughter, Susan Routt and husband John of Bedford, Va.; grandchildren, Tracy Sadler and husband Gus of Bath, and Ryan Williams and partner Will Smith of Asheville; and three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Cherry and Alleigh Sadler both of Bath, and Rainier Smith-Williams of Asheville; a brother, Allen Draughon of Warsaw, very special friends “BJ” Jarmon, Diane Johnson, and Mary Terry of Jamesville, and her beloved feline companions, “Boots” and “Emma.”

The family would like to extend our gratitude and a thank you to Dr. Mark Johnson and Heart Institute staff for the outstanding personal and medical care provided for Mrs. Gaines and her family during her stay there.

The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jamesville Baptist Church with the Rev. Mack officiating. Burial will follow at Jamesville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. tonight at Biggs Funeral Home and other times at the home of Calvin and Cindy Brown, 2931 Mill Road, Jamesville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Jamesville Baptist Church, 1187 Sunset Ave., Jamesville, NC 27846 or Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Homes, 860 Red Hill Road, Brookneal, VA 24528, www.patrickhenry.org.
