Sound Off highlights anonymous, brief takes on the news offered via telephone by Daily News readers.

Hyde County constructed a new jail facility several years ago with U.S. Department of Agriculture money, your tax dollars. The jail sits there today unoccupied because Hyde County does not have the funds to staff it. Beaufort County needs to consider alternatives to building a new detention center. Perhaps merging with other counties may be a solution. Beaufort County taxpayers cannot afford a new jail anymore than Hyde County can.

The best thing about the Sunday Washington Daily News was the plastic bag it was delivered in.

Abortion is legal. If you haven’t learned to use proper birth control at this point in history, then you are responsible.

If a woman gets pregnant and chooses to have an abortion, the man cannot stop her. However, if a woman chooses to have the child and the man doesn’t want to, he is still required to pay child support. There’s you a paradox.

My biggest complaint is we’re in the rural Bath area. We’re getting many newspapers without the Parade (magazine). We’re paying 50 cents for a bunch of crap, as is. We get numerous advertisements for everything. The paper has become a pull-it paper, not a Pulitzer Prize paper. What is going on? Washington Daily News, you can do better. The expertise is there. Use it. We are totally incensed at the treatment we are getting from your great newspaper.
