Carrying out its mission

The Washington Harbor District Alliance, busy as it is throughout any year, is entering its busy season. That’s a good thing for the city because many of its upcoming events will bring visitors — and area residents — to the city’s central business district.

As the area continues to recover from the Great Recession, events that bring people and their dollars to the city should be welcomed.

Next week, Music in the Streets returns for its 10th year. That means downtown restaurants should, once again, be filled with patrons each time a Music in the Streets event is held. That will make downtown restaurateurs smile. Over its history, Music in the Streets has proven to be an amazing social event, with Main and Market streets crowded with neighbors, former classmates, extended families and old friends renewing acquaintances.

And don’t forget that Music in the Streets is free, good entertainment.

The Washington Harbor District Alliance is bringing its Marine Market back for a second year April 28. That’s another event bringing people to the city’s central business district, some of which will visit and spend money at downtown businesses.

Saturday Market, another WHDA enterprise, returns to downtown Washington on April 14. Saturday Market features locally grown produce, baked goods prepared by area resident and jams, jellies and relishes also produced locally.

“The mission of Washington Harbor District Alliance is to serve as a facilitator and catalyst to renew, restore, rebuild and revitalize the downtown business district, improve economic conditions, encourage tourism and preserve historical buildings and their significance,” reads the WHDA mission statement.

The crowds at Music in the Streets and the vendors and customers at Saturday Market and the Marine Market are proof WDHA is carrying out its mission successfully.

WHDA is doing its part to help revitalize downtown. We can do our part by going to Music in the Streets, buying items at Saturday Market and supporting other WHDA events, activities and programs.
