Joseph Howard Spruill, 84, of 736 Millpond Road, Roper, died Monday, April 23, 2012, at Washington County Hospital. He was born in Washington County on April 30, 1927, to the late James Thomas and Sarah Jane Leary Spruill and was predeceased by a son, Joseph Wayne Spruill; sister, Anna Jane Spruill Gaye; half-sisters, Madeline Spruill and Ethel Davenport Spruill; brothers, Junior, Haywood, Charlie D., Arthur Carnell Spruill; half-brothers, Jimmy, Lonnie Spruill and Leroy Cahoon. Mr. Spruill attended Holly Neck Church of Christ and retired from Weyerhaeuser. He was a Mason and Shriner. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday from Walker’s Horner Chapel by the Rev. Leonard Bowers. Burial with military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Plymouth.
Survivors include a son, Michael Howard Spruill Sr. and his wife Tessa B. Spruill of Winterville; a sister, Elizabeth S. Wynn of Roper; four grandchildren, Megan, Joshua, Jacob, and Michael Spruill Jr., and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. today at Walker’s Horner Chapel and at other times from the home.
