Ruth Cox Sutton

Ruth Cox Sutton, 86, formerly of Woodland Circle, Hertford, and more recently of Edenton, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012, in Vidant Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

Mrs. Sutton was born in Beaufort County and was the daughter of the late Gilbert Edward and Cassie Cox and from an early age was raised by the late Edgar and Mary Elizabeth Paul. A homemaker, she was also a Mary Kay Cosmetics consultant for 30 years and a member of Hertford Baptist Church. She was the widow of the late Clyde L. Sutton whom she was married to for 68 years and who preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 2011. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Joshua, Gerald and James Cox, and Bobby and Reid Paul. A wonderful Christian woman, she was loved by all who met her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Her final thoughts were for her unborn great-grandson, Matthew Ryan Mays.

Surviving are her two daughters, Julia S. Rogers and husband Wade of Plymouth and Pamela S. Stallings and husband Jimmy of Edenton; a son, Steve Sutton and wife Ellen of Elizabeth City; two brothers, Brinson Paul of Murfreesboro and Dr. Donald R. Paul of Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren, Beth R. Franck and husband David, Wayland Rogers and wife Becca, Jennifer S. Mays and husband Matt, Amy S. Roberson and husband Eric, Dana S. Cooke and husband Tim, Stephanie S. Sawyer and husband Jody, Josh Sutton and wife Danielle, Leslie Harris and Randall Harris; and 13 great-grandchildren, Kassie and Katelyn Franck, Hannah and Grace Rogers, Hailey and Ethan Roberson, Brianna and Bailey Sawyer, Troy and Kaitlyn Sutton, Ashlyn and Kayla Cooke, and Harper Mays.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Edenton United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Ray Davis. Friends may join the family in the church social hall immediately after the service and all other times at the home of her daughter, Pamela Stallings, 513 Kimberly Drive, Edenton. A private burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Plymouth.
