In an email to the Daily News from chef Brandon B. Qualls, the owners of Pia’s restaurant in downtown Washington announced their plans to retire and close the popular fine-dining establishment effective Monday.

“It has became apparent after much deliberation and thought that it is time for Pia’s to change its path,” read the news release from Qualls sent on behalf of John and Pia VanCoutren. “In the wake of taking a trip overseas to address family matters, it became inherently clear that it was time to step away from the beloved restaurant business.

“Mr. VanCoutren and wife Pia have decided to retire.”

The VanCoutren’s were reportedly traveling overseas and not available for comment.
