PTRF launches youth kayaking program

The Pamlico-Tar River Foundation has launched a new youth kayaking program.

Youths between the ages of nine and 18 are invited to learn introductory kayaking skills, environmental stewardship and community building through kayaking trips on the Pamlico River. Initial trips will focus on Beaufort and Pitt counties; however, trips will be scheduled in other areas along the river if there is interest.

The youth kayaking program is free, and kayaks and equipment will be provided. Parents and counselors are welcome on the trips, but adults are asked to supply their kayaks so more children may participate.

Trips will be scheduled starting Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. The trip will begin with a water-safety course followed by an introduction to kayaking. Participants will learn about the river and how and why it is important to protect it. The children will participate in kayaking games to help them master the sport and interact with their peers.

“The youth kayaking program is an opportunity to get children involved in the community and interested in outdoor recreational activities while promoting environmental education,” said Kimberly Chadwick, program coordinator.

Kayaking trips will take place every Wednesday and Saturday. Interested individuals, groups and organizations that work with youth should contact PTRF at 252-946-7211 or email Kimberly Chadwick at info@ptrf.org with the subject line: “youth kayaking.”

PTRF is accepting donations to help offset the cost of the program. Interested individuals and businesses may contact the office regarding sponsorship opportunities.

PTRF is a grassroots, nonprofit organization whose mission is to protect and improve the environmental quality of the Pamlico-Tar River, its watersheds and estuaries.
