As of Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012, at least 1,953 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to an Associated Press count.
The AP count is two less than the Defense Department’s tally, last updated Monday at 10 a.m. EDT.
At least 1,627 military service members have died in Afghanistan as a result of hostile action, according to the military’s numbers.
Outside of Afghanistan, the department reports at least 116 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, 12 were the result of hostile action.
The AP count of total OEF casualties outside of Afghanistan is one more than the department’s tally.
The Defense Department also counts three military civilian deaths.
Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 17,095 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department.
The latest identifications reported by the military:
—Three Marines died Aug. 10 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan; they were assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force. Their parent command was 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Killed were: Staff Sgt. Scott E. Dickinson, 29, of San Diego, Calif.; Cpl. Richard A. Rivera Jr., 20 of Ventura, Calif., and Lance Cpl. Gregory T. Buckley, 21, of Oceanside, N.Y.
—Three Marines died Aug. 10 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan; they were assigned to 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Pendleton, Calif. Killed were: Capt. Matthew P. Manoukian, 29, of Los Altos Hills, Calif.; Gunnery Sgt. Ryan Jeschke, 31, of Herndon, Va., and Staff Sgt. Sky R. Mote, 27, of El Dorado, Calif.
— Master Sgt. Gregory R. Trent, 38, of Norton, Mass., died Aug. 8 in Bethesda, Md., from wounds suffered July 31 in Baktabad, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with small-arms fire; assigned to the 4th Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C.
—Two soldiers died Aug. 8 in Kunar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when they encountered an insurgent who detonated a suicide vest; they were assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo. Killed were: Maj. Thomas E. Kennedy, 35, of West Point, N.Y.; and Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin J. Griffin, 45, of Laramie, Wyo.
—Maj. Walter D. Gray, 38, of Conyers, Ga., died Aug. 8 from injuries suffered during a suicide bomb attack in Kunar province, Afghanistan; assigned to the 13th Air Support Operations Squadron, Fort Carson, Colo.
—Spc. Ethan J. Martin, 22, of Lewiston, Idaho, died Aug. 7 in Koragay, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when he encountered enemy small-arms fire; assigned to 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.
—Petty Officer 3rd Class Clayton R. Beauchamp, 21, of Weatherford, Texas, died Aug. 7 when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device while conducting a dismounted patrol in Helmand province, Afghanistan; assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 6, 1st Marine Division (Forward), I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), Camp Pendleton, Calif.
— Cpl. Daniel L. Linnabary II, 23, of Hubert, N.C., died Aug. 6 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan; assigned to 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
