Belhaven Police Chief F.P. Clingenpeel said Jonathan Ray Cooper, of West Main Street, Belhaven, was arrested on Aug. 22, and charged with possession of both marijuana and cocaine. Clingenpeel estimated Cooper was in possession of approximately 25 grams of marijuana and 12 grams of cocaine.
A citizen’s complaint led to the arrest of Cooper, said a press release from the Town of Belhaven.
“We received a complaint that someone thought he was selling narcotics out of his residence,” said Clingenpeel. “While we investigated, we found probable cause to execute a search warrant.”
Cooper was held at the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $2500 secured bond. At the time of his arrest, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office had another warrant for Cooper, charging him with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana.
A spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit said investigators with the Drug Unit made a controlled marijuana buy from Cooper earlier in the year.
“This is outstanding performance by the Belhaven Police Department,” said Belhaven’s Mayor Adam O’Neal in a press release from the Town of Belhaven. “This is just another example of how successful community policing has been in Belhaven.”
