WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH (AP) — A weather-worn pier in Wrightsville Beach will be about 25 feet shorter when one damaged portion is demolished.
The StarNews of Wilmington reported (bit.ly/TuZdW0) that part of the Crystal Pier will be demolished as soon as the necessary permits are acquired.
Last week, the town installed signs warning swimmers and surfers about the structure’s instability after high surf brought down a piling and a cross-bracing beam. With rough waters expected this weekend from Hurricane Leslie, town officials’ chief concern is safety.

Town manager Bill Simpson says the safety issues are only limited to those in the water near the pier. He says there are no safety threats to those walking on the beach or eating at the restaurant to which the pier is attached.
