The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office arrested two local residents, charging the two with trafficking in opiates, said a release from the sheriff’s office’s Drug Unit.
Andrew Alan Leathers, 37, of 205 Clayton St., Washington, and Danielle Midkiff Hunnings, 28, of 1216 Whichard’s Beach Road, Chocowinity, were arrested Thursday. Drug Unit investigators had Leathers’ home under surveillance and stopped Leathers’ and Hunnings’ vehicles when the two left the Clayton Street residence. According to the release, prescription pain medications were found on each: Leathers had Hydrocodone, Methadone and Oxycontin; Hunnings, had Morphine Sulfate and Oxycodone. Neither had prescriptions for the drugs, said the release.
Morphine Sulfate is morphine in pill form — a stronger, Scheduled II controlled substance, said a spokesman from the Drug Unit.
At the time of the arrest, the Drug Unit had active arrest warrants for Leathers, as investigators had previously made controlled purchases of pain medications from him, said the spokesman.
Leathers, placed under a $50,000 unsecured bond, charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver a Schedule II controlled substance, two counts of conspiring to traffic in opiates, two counts of level II trafficking in opiates and four counts of level I trafficking in opiates. Hunnings was charged with two counts of level I trafficking in opiates. She was held at the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond.
The investigation began when law enforcement was tipped off that Leathers was dealing in prescription pain medication, the release said.
