Beaufort County Police Activities League coordinated an all-day field trip to for 10 students to attend the Navy air show at Oceana Naval Air Station Virginia Beach, Va., on Saturday.
Five of the students were from Belhaven. Five were from Washington. They ranged in ages from 10 to 13 and included eight girls.
Instrumental in coordinating the field trip, the first time out of North Carolina for some of the students, were Belhaven police Chief Fred Clingenpeel and Washington police Chief Stacy Drakeford. Three PAL members accompanied the students: local PAL President Alvin Powell, PAL board member Marc Recko, Washington Housing Authority’s executive director, and Clingenpeel. The air show, one of the largest on the East Coast, featured numerous static displays of airplanes, equipment and information booths that provided the students with first-hand exposure to educational opportunities and careers in the aerospace industry. The air show also featured outstanding flight demonstrations of various types and civilian, aerobatic and military aircraft, with the Navy’s Blue Angels flight demonstration team being the featured act.
PAL collaborated with the Belhaven unit of the Beaufort County Boys & Girls Club to obtain the students from the Belhaven area.
