Dr. Charles “Chuck” Hodges Manning, Jr., of Washington died September 22, 2012. He was born on April 5, 1948, the son of the late Charles Hodges Manning, Sr. and Annie Bridgman Manning Burrus. Chuck grew up in Williamston, NC. He graduated from Williamston High School in 1966 and was awarded the Most Athletic trophy at graduation. This trophy also had Gaylord Perry’s name inscribed on it, a Major League Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher. After high school, Chuck attended North Carolina State University in the pre-veterinary program. While at N.C. State, he played on the freshman football team and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He attended the University of Georgia, School of Veterinary Medicine where he graduated in 1973. After one year of practice in Florida, Chuck moved to Washington, NC and established a veterinary practice. In 1977, Chuck opened Pamlico Animal Hospital and practiced there for the next 28 years. There, he enjoyed meeting many people and their pets and worked with many wonderful and dedicated co-workers. He also enjoyed working with livestock and meeting many nice people in Beaufort and surrounding counties. He retired from practicing veterinary medicine in 2005.
Chuck loved living in Washington and enjoyed being active in his community. He was a member of the First Christian Church. Chuck coached baseball in the Little Tarheel League and Junior Babe Ruth League for 15 years. He served as president of the Babe Ruth League for some of those years. Chuck loved the outdoors, playing golf at the Washington Yacht and Country Club, gardening and living on the Pamlico River. He was an original member of Lifestyles Fitness Center where he exercised often and made many good friends. He was also an original supporter donor of the North Carolina Estuarium in Washington. Chuck also loved to travel. He traveled to Ghana, Africa, Haiti and Nicaragua three times to do volunteer work.
Chuck loved his family and his favorite thing of all was spending time with his wife, Jeannie, his children and grandchildren.
Chuck was predeceased by his father, Charles Hodges Manning, Sr., who died in 1988 and was an attorney and judge from Williamston, NC.
Surviving are his dedicated wife, Dr. Jeannie Golden Manning, a Professor in Psychology at ECU; mother, Annie Bridgman Manning Burrus of Raleigh, NC; son, Charles Hodges Manning III and wife Lesleigh of Washington and their three children, Caroline, Emily and Hodges; daughter Kathy Manning Miles, her husband Hart of Raleigh and their two children Hart and Wade; daughter, Sarah Golden Manning of Washington; sister Celia Manning Poole and her husband Grey of Raleigh and their daughters Susan Poole Whatmore, her husband Max and their son Adrian, Ashley Bridgman Poole, Brock Poole Lunceford and her husband, Tommy; sister Miriam Manning Sauls, her husband Bruce of Raleigh and their children Claire and Will, as well as many cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 28, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at First Christian Church of Washington. Visitation will be at Paul Funeral Home on Thursday, September 27, 2012, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.
