The Beaufort County Arts Council’s 48th annual juried Fine Arts Show is slated to take place as part of the activities associated with downtown Washington’s annual Smoke On The Water festival on Saturday, Oct. 27. The show will open to the public on Thursday, Oct. 25, and will feature over 400 works by approximately 200 artists in a variety of mediums. Held in the Washington Civic Center on Gladden Street in historic downtown Washington, the show will be free and open to the public through Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

BCAC will receive works for the Fine Arts Show on Sunday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Civic Center. Artists may enter up to four works in four categories:  watercolors, oils and acrylics, graphics/open mixed, and three-dimensional. The entry fee is $20 for one or two entries and $7.50 each for up to four entries. A show prospectus with Fine Arts Show guidelines is available by calling or emailing the Arts Council, and is also available on their website at www.beaufortcountyartscouncil.org.

BCAC is pleased to announce that the juror for the 2012 show will be Alexis Joyner. A sculptor and chairman of the arts department at Elizabeth City State University, Joyner has produced hundreds of pieces — mostly in wood — during his more than 30-year career as a professional artist. Ranging in height from 1 1/2 to 7 feet tall, his works are dramatic and inspiring.

Over $3,900 in cash awards is presented at the Fine Arts Show. Awards are given for first–, second– and third–place and honorable mention in each category. Cash awards of $150 for first place and $75 for second place are presented in each category. Twelve additional awards include the Frances M. and William R. Roberson Jr. Best in Show Award of $500, Richard W. Tripp Best Watercolor Landscape of $300, East Carolina Wildfowl Guild Award of $150, Margaret Hodges Hackney Award for Best Beaufort County Entry of $200, Pamlico-Tar River Foundation Award of $75, the Young Ones Award of $100, the Irene Glover Forbes Pottery Award of $50, The Garden World Award of $100 given by the Washington Garden Club, the Franke Rumley Textile Award of $100, the People First Award given by Louise and Harold Lane and the Mark and Suzette Bardill Purchase Award of $1,000.
